Drum Roll Please!

2/17/2019

A few days have passed by since my last submission. Considering Mr. Greene is extremely busy, this is to be expected. As the last set of January classes are coming to an end, tensions are incredibly high. This is because I have a large capstone assignment due and I am having a hard time managing the number of internship hours I was once maintaining. In the beginning, Mr. Greene and I set a goal that was easily obtainable, and I knew some weeks would be easier than others to accumulate more hours. In my mind, I knew early on that I wanted the first or second week in March to be my last set hours to obtain—that didn’t happen. As I look back, I’m questioning if I could have achieved more early on. That wasn’t being realistic either. So, as I’m looking at the calendar and mapping out my final stretch of hours, I received an email from Mr. Greene commenting on the assignment that I created for Lili—he was impressed. In my mind, I’m thinking “I’ve come along way, and he doesn’t know the half 😊.” For me, this was a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders. As I reflect on my journey as a virtual sports agent intern and the challenges of a virtual environment, it became more evident that being a virtual student is a lot harder than it seems. This is particularly due to not having a specific work environment that creates an actual feeling of being a sports agent. In other words, a hands-on experience would have subsided the repetition of most of these assignments. On the other hand, your able to balance a workload and move at your own pace, which allows you to set goals that may or may not be easily obtainable in a designated work environment.

One Last Addition Before Submission

2/14/2019

After reviewing the final portion of the assignment, I felt that I could extend the task and create another portion that could be beneficial for Lili to start her process as a keynote speaker. In earlier weeks, when Mr. Greene and I spoke about this assignment, he initially mentioned that he personally knew Lili Thompson. In fact, she was a granddaughter of his previous basketball coach that has passed on. As mentioned before, he (Mr. Greene) was also the contact person that connected Lili to the Harlem Globetrotters. In my efforts to start Lili’s journey, I decided to research the Inkster, Michigan area for updated functions that I felt Lili exceeded the requirements to obtain information about these upcoming functions. After compiling a list of appropriate events, I was able to create ten different socials that will take place in the months of March and April. Although I tried to remain in the local area, I wanted Lili to gain the experience and feel more comfortable addressing a wide range of audiences. These events that I listed for her had contact information, dates of the events and a brief overview of what the event was about. Many of these events that I researched were influential to youth organizations, minorities, behavior clubs, and women’s social groups. Once I learned Lili’s success, I felt she could inspire different audiences by voicing her motivational story. In the end, regardless of the challenges, this task by far was my personal favorite. I’m not necessarily worried or focused on the feedback because I tried my best to conquer a task that was new to me. After completing numerous classes within my MBA Journey, this assignment created a memory that will help me advance in my future business endeavors.

But Wait There’s More…

2/12/2019

Since my last session and reviewing all of my completed work for a strategy on speaking engagements, I spent the day organizing my work and adding more personalized detail that directly targeted Lili. Some of this time was spent addressing Lili directly and included some professional coaching on managing social media accounts. I also mentioned on multiple occasions reminding Lili to tell her success story and that people will now view her as a celebrity—so never lose sight of your overall purpose of entering the world of a keynote motivational speaker.

Reflecting on this assignment so far, I have been faced with many challenges—including the merely impossible challenge of creating a structure that I’ve never engaged in or would have been easier to develop as a team; using a variety of different ideas to create this strategic design. At this point, I am unsure what Lili’s schedule is like considering she tours with the Harlem Globetrotters. It was also never mentioned to me as to how soon she would try to partake in her first engagement. However, I do recall her being a successful presenter from a previous engagement at Stanford University while in attendance. This made me feel that she could handle the strategy that was designed for her future speaking arrangements. So far, even the challenges that I’ve experienced during this task were severe enough to quit; I was able to reach out to personal mentors to help guide me through this task using a guided approach of lessons learned.

Phase 3: Success Strategies During Engagements

2/7/2019

When entering phase 3 of the assigned task, I was more concerned with the actual operation of the presentation as a whole. I developed specific headliners to keep the audience’s attention and engage in activity while capturing the overall message the author was presenting. In order to complete this task, I thought about functions that I’ve personality attended and decided on key success factors that could have critiqued the technique—to create a better flow. One experience I thought about was graduation keynote speakers. In the past, I am sure many of us have experienced minutes or delayed hours of horrific speeches that amounted to be nothing more than a bunch of mumble-jumble. I decided not to pursue that avenue. Instead, I listed interactive qualities that Lili could efficiently manage such as:

1. TELL YOUR STORY- This why the business picked you for the specific event.

2. Entertain the audience- Interact with the audience with questions, ice breakers, music, dances, crowd performances, and add special guests (former teammates, coaches, influential friends or family, a member or two from the Globetrotters).

3. Stay within the time limits of the specified time- Leave room for the audience to ask questions, take pictures, receive autographs (personalize the experience).

4. Offer your brands “catchy” gear- throw out gear to the crowd during the entertainment portion.

5. Acknowledge the audience- get to know your audience on a first name basis even if you only remember these names during the event. Take and post updated pictures from each event (people love to follow-up and see themselves on website photos).

6. Write letters of “thanks” to the business entity for allowing you to tell your story.

Brainstorming Part II

2/5/2019

After a day of clearing frustrated thoughts from phase one, I decided to attack this task head-on. Today, my thoughts are clear, and I have yet to think about “what’s next.” Then I decided to watch some YouTube videos of “TEDTalks.” As many of us know, this brand is well established. However, there was once a beginning for them too. When studying these videos, I noticed a direct correlation between their audiences. So, I decided to develop the strategies for obtaining the actual events and contact information. Under each headliner were sub-liners that presented the reasoning for approaching the task in a specific manner as it pertains to Lili:

1. Network- Talk to influential people who have contacts with different programs.

2. Use social media as an organized platform- As we know, social media is used for a variety of subjects, professionally approach different foundations with a custom letter expressing interest in speaking engagements. Present a vague overview of the reasons as to why this personalized story fits the occasion. Create a speaking engagement resume.

3. Personally (or agent), contact schools and other business entities about being a part of their next venture. Provide 3-4 sentences on who you are, what you speak about and how you can help their audience with your message.

4. Start local- Interact in local events such as school assembly’s, concerts, parades, youth clubs/recreation centers, and festivals (this is where the business cards and “catchy” gear is acceptable to pass out, enforcing your brand).

5. Think Big- When opportunities arise, take action even if the offered funds are lower than the expected budget. These baby steps will soon blossom into a substantial foundation with a more significant cause. Reapply for annual events and always “shoot your shot” with significant opportunities, you will never know who is in attendance.

6. Be specific- Whatever you need for your engagement, make sure the entire business is aware of your needs when making initial contact. This option will leave room for adjustments (for example cost, equipment, space, changing rooms, special seating, etc.).

As you can see, interning was intense, but I was eager to make more progress. At this point, I enjoy transforming the challenge into another statistic for my resume and thought, “in no time, I’ll be completing these tasks on a regular basis.”

Completely New Experience

2/3/2019

Prior to being assigned the task, I have no previous knowledge of how to formulate a strategy for speaking engagements. From the initial instructions, this task seemed relatively easy until I realized I did not know where to begin. Step one of the process involved me performing multiple searches to understand what exactly I was told to do. While researching, I noticed many different views and topics about the task, but no examples to follow. At this point, I decided to take an hour to brainstorm and generate ideas from some experiences within the coursework. After thinking long and hard, that wasn’t much help either. Still, in phase one of the task, I generated an idea as if I was trying to obtain a speaking engagement. Of course, the first idea was the gather contact information. In reality, that seemed reasonable, but I knew the process could not start there. So, I dug deeper and said, “if I wanted to speak at an engagement for Kobe Bryant, how would I go about initiating the process?” Bells rang-off. Let the brainstorming process begin. First, I decided to seek an agent or activities coordinator who can manage a contact list. The next headliner was all about communication and etiquette on how to become and remain a professional as this brand evolves. The final stages of phase one discussed attendance and proper branding to gather the attention of a specific audience.

By far, this was a challenging but exciting task. It made me not only think outside the box, but I had to make this task original with no formats, previous experience, or layouts that fit the description of the instructions. In my mind, this task was more than I could handle without a team. However, I was dedicated to making this task my own without any instruction or guidance. Considering this was another long day of work, I decided to end the day with these few essential elements until the next session. Even though I felt I made some accomplishments, I also felt overwhelmed with the lack of material I researched being no help and writer’s block started to activate.

The Introduction of a New Project

1/31/2019

For the new project, the instructions we simple as usual; develop a strategy for speaking engagements for Lili Thompson. Once again with the broad range of instructions, I covered all bases. Today, I narrowed down the process and placed the assignment into three topics:

1. Structure for Speaking Engagements

2. Strategies for Obtaining Events and Contact Information

3. Success Strategies During Engagements

Knowing that I wanted to stick to the two-hour plan, I broke each of these topics down and decided to tackle the topic one at a time. The outline for these topics addressed the process from beginning to end with at least 5 techniques to incorporate under each headliner. Some information seems like a “no brainer,” but I did not want Lili to make any mistakes in her speaking engagement career. I knew from previous conversations that Lili was very articulate and had success with previous presentations. However, I took this project and introduced the format into a career layout. This layout was designed for Lili to follow when she is not entertaining with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Who is Lili Thompson?

1/30/2019

Impressive qualities that Lili Thompson possess can be a voice to reach people of all ages. A collegiate athlete competing at Division 1 NCAA level, who honored her grandfather, Lili knows and understands the physical, mental, and emotional attributes one must endure pushing through life’s challenges. According to Thompson’s background, her articulate language, bubbling personality, and military family background are approaches that will gather the attention of others. In order to prepare herself, Lili should focus on a strategy that ultimately tells her success story, that will lead others in the direction of success. After all, Lili is a competitive athlete who faced adversities which included recruiters and professional leagues who counted her out. However, after her ACL healing, she never gave up. In fact, she worked harder, and as a result, she was selected to join The Harlem Globetrotters.

These were my findings of Lili that was summarized to fit an overall view of who she was and the drive that pushed her to become successful. Now all I have to do is reach out to Mr. Greene and let him know that I am ready for him to assign me a new project.

Social Media and Such…

1/28/2019

When researching Lili, the first stage was looking up this person’s social media to see what qualities she possess and skills that surrounds who she is. Next, I gathered all of the information that I could on employment history and educational background. Last, I went to YouTube.com and found some highlight reels. After compiling a mere two hours of research, I decided to place my ideas into a paragraph for which essentially highlighted the success story. This short story about Lili was just enough to capture the audience keeping in mind; I haven’t received the actual assignment just brainstorming some ideas to keep me presenting facts based on what I researched. So far, I know whatever the assignment is, has to have some importance because Mr. Greene gave me a few days to “get to know her.”

I loved this task. Not only was this task relaxed but I really wanted to “get to know Lili.” This task that allowed me to research at my own paste allowed me to build a timeline of events to discuss for whatever assignment was to come. All I knew was I needed to be prepared. I tried to cover all bases of this task to remove the process of redundancy.

Taking it Easy in January

1/27/2019

Welcome back sports friends! Its been a while since I last logged any hours. So for the month of January, I have a goal to obtain a total of 8 hours over the next four days. Since my last venture of completing overseas profiles, my mentor wrote me an email that praised my work and said he would reach out to me soon. While soon was passing by, I have been dealing with an injury, which has kept me away from accumulating numerous hours, so this was helping to let time past by. Once week three approached, I still haven’t heard anything from Mr.Greene, but I was confident that I was going to reach out to him---so I did. After playing phone tag, I finally spoke with Mr. Greene, and he presented another assignment. Per the instructions, I was told to research Lili Thompson and gather some information about her. Mr. Greene said, “he didn’t necessarily want a report on her, but the information that I read about her will be helpful in completing the next assignment.” During this conversation, he did mention that he knew her personally. So, this was my cue to gather nothing but the facts surrounding Lili Thompson.

Reflection Day

12/29/2018

I decided early on that I would make one of my internship days a reflection day. This day is designed to complete the finished product and discuss/review my thoughts on the project as a whole. This day is timed, and can not surpass two hours. As I review the overall assignment, I will address the negative challenges first. I wish the instructions were not broad. This leaves too much space for errors. Per the initial instructions, knowing my mentor's background, I assumed he had all of the contact information and needed me to find teams that Paris could try out for. When I use the term try out, I am referring to the skills camps that are usually hosted in the spring and summer in various locations in the United States. I also felt the website needed to be kept updated to perform this type of project. This would have allowed my list to be more in-depth compared to the original list that had over 100 additional teams; later narrowed to 30 or more (this was a lot of work to only achieve contact information for 30+ teams over 47 countries). On the positive side, although at glace the website was great, just not in the regards of the assignment. I was able to obtain some information that may be educational for personal use. I also enjoy the luxury of Mr. Greene not putting a time limit on the work he assigns. I believe this is mainly because his assignments are not one-week tasks, he wants to see how hard you will work to present excellent work and respects the fact that you have other educational obligations aside from internship.

The Other Half of Contact Information

12/28/2018

There are more teams without contact information than I imagined. So as I completed the first have yesterday and finish up today, I will try my best to try some extensive research to tackle the information that is not provided. As I proceeded to perform outside research, I was not having the best of luck. In fact, when typing up these teams, received different Wikipedia sources. As we all know, those aren’t reliable sources; anyone can add change or edit a topic. So I remained focused on completing the task. Once completed, I reorganized the process and deleted information that was nowhere to be found.

Now my word document in its final stages includes:

1. Countries listed in alphabetical order

2. Qualifying teams for each country suitable for Paris

3. Different Professional Leagues (if more than one type of league is presented in that      country)

4. Contact information to reach out to these teams

5. 30 plus qualifying teams.

Stage 3

12/16/2018

Stage 3 of the will complete the task that Mr. Greene instructed. Today I am determined to complete all of the projects after finalization. Stage 3 allowed me to view the roster’s of these teams only paying attention to the point guard and shooting guard positions. Once I saw these players with non-competitive statistics, that allowed stronger possibilities for Paris to find placement with these teams. So, I went back through the last 24 countries and removed these teams. In the end, I removed a total of 50 teams that “disqualifies” Paris. Now that I have the names of the teams Mr. Greene asked me to list, I finished up the organization process and submitted my final works. Looking back at the challenges, I am still the master of repetition and I wish the project instructions weren’t so broad. The broad instructions have you viewing the project from multiple angles. Whereas specific instructions provide you with a checklist to follow that removes the process of redundancy. For now, I’ll wait to hear feedback from the results of the project.

Remember the Titans?...”You're Killing Me, Petey”

12/18/2018

After completing a massive project that involved creating a list of teams that Paris McLeod would be a possible candidate, I spoke with Mr. Greene about the results of the information that I presented. He started off saying “the information you gave me was good, but I was more so looking for contact phone numbers or emails for these teams.” In my mind, I’m thinking “this is totally a dream because this can’t be life.” Sure enough—it was. Our conversation was concise, and I reminded myself why it’s good to ask questions even if you feel intimidated. Now that I have a list of countries and over 100 additional teams, I had to start from the top and provide contact information for all of these teams. Unfortunately, some of these teams that made the list did not have contact information. Early on per the initial instructions, I assumed Mr. Greene had a list of contact information because he is already an agent. In my mind, this would be the equivalent to having a business phone book. I guess I was wrong for assuming. None the less, this portion of the project was merely split in half. I completed some for today, and the rest will become tomorrows task.

Nine...

12/15/2018

Today, I am excited to complete my last nine countries of professional basketball teams in Europe. From the list on eurobasket.com, I need to complete findings for Serbia to the United Kingdom. Of Course the I am feeling the rage of exhaustion since the beginning of last week. With temptations to quit, I pushed through and completed these teams. Now I am able to move on to stage 2 of my strategy. This portion of the project starts at the 24 country mark and eliminates teams who do not provide information or has an elite record. This task is simple, once you click on a country the records are usually presented next to the team name. At this point it was easier to complete 12 and 12—so I did. As tomorrow approaches, I will complete the same task for the remainder of the teams and move on to stage 3.

And Nine

12/13/2018

Here we are down to the last 18 countries that have information added to the list. As I am going through the teams, I am merely checking to see if these teams have a record. As long as these teams do not present a 0-0 record or say “no information at this time,” these teams will be added to today’s list, I am only sticking to nine countries, and this includes the different leagues some of these countries have. As I am approaching these countries, the information is becoming a “hit or miss.” As the repetitive process continues, I revert back to my organizational procedures of the list; trying to keep that update, so the work is less strenuous towards the end of the assignment. At this point, knowing I am burnout, I have created an every other day schedule to help relieve the thought of repetition. By the end of the assignment today, I will only have nine countries to complete stage 1 of the revamped strategy process.

Repetition is Draining, but My Strategy is Working

12/11/2018

At this point, I am drilling this assignment into my head. The repetition is becoming bothersome, and once I complete a specific country, the process just keeps rolling with more clicks of a button, typing, and organizing these teams. Multi-tasking, discipline, patience, research, strategy, and analyzation are qualities that you must possess in order to fill the needs of Mr. Greene’s task. I am currently down to my last 24 teams, and it’s been Sam Cooke—A Long Time Coming. I’m approaching the halfway mark, and I cannot believe it. So, I keep going. At this point, I’m going to complete 6 more teams for the day, and I will wrap up for the day.

As I am back experiencing burnout, my strategy is working, but I am looking at the potential this website has. It would be nice if each league designated media personnel to keep their league update. It’s not only unfair to the players who may want to seek the WNBA for opportunities; not to mention, the efforts of keeping family and friends inside the loop and progress of each player as an individual. In the end, we must keep in mind that these are professional leagues. Once I complete the remaining teams, I will then start the process of elimination from there.

We're Making Some Progress Over Here

12/9/2018

I knew these next four days were going to be dangerous. As the semester is coming to an end for the holiday break, I decided to finish all of my research this week. However, I knew this task would be hard so, I had to revamp my strategy. What I did was placed all of the teams on the list for now; regardless of record or the amount of information, the site provided. Today, I completed 10 more teams. Once those teams were on the list, I went through all of the work so far and placed each team in alphabetical order according to the name of the country. Once completed, I split the teams into their appropriate leagues and made an Excel spreadsheet.

As I approached Excel, I noticed the cells were too small to follow along and cut-off most of the team names. So, I decided to take the list and make a word document. I see more and more progress. Now, once I finish the next three days at the end of the week, I will have all of the teams listed on the list. The challenge for me at this point involves the flipping between computer screens and the lack of obtaining simple information. As more days are ahead, I’ll have this work completed in no time.

It’s Just Two Hours

12/8/2018

Looking back at the MBA program, It feels good only to have one class at a time, and the other hours that would be considered a class, I narrowed them down two-hour timer competitions. I wish I would have used this method throughout the course. In doing this, I’ve learned that this two-hour system, is an excellent challenge once you develop a strategy. Prior to performing some of my internship tasks, I would complete countless hours of work and experience burnout faster than I imagined.

Under these few hours, I was able to complete team findings to add to the list. Once again this task is not always easy because some teams do not provide any information. After understanding the downfall of the website, I decided not to stress over it and complete the task with the information that was given to me. In the meantime, my list for Paris is getting larger and some of these destinations with the exception of Germany present strong possibilities.

Germany happens to be the country that every international basketball player loves to be a part of. However, I felt the need to shy away from these teams because they tend to deal with the same successful sports agents and I was unsure if Mr. Greene had information or connections with people in the area. However, I did apply the list with teams in Germany that present a solid winning record. Needless to say, I don’t recommend it, but anything possible.

Completing Europe's E-H Professional Teams

12/6/2018

Today was a lot tougher than I hoped for. Some of these countries just didn’t provide any information. So I tried to complete some outside research. This research was web-based, and I merely tried to search for a specific country and their professional basketball teams for women. Some didn’t have any, so I moved on whereas other countries that I’ve visited from the site had multiple teams but did not provide information. On my end, it seems like these teams did not update the site or these teams no longer existed. Finally, teams that had information seem like they only played against the same 4-6 teams and that didn’t seem accurate.

In the back of my mind, I’m thinking “do what Mr. Greene asked me to do and just find and list the teams.” So, I did just that. By this time, I’ve completed 3 days of finding teams for Paris and have approximately 22 teams in total. At this point, I still have plenty of time to complete the task. So I fill my day looking at some of Paris’s highlight film and game stats. She looks like she has the ability to play at this level of competition. However, now I’m becoming worried because I don’t know Paris and hoping these teams find her to be a good fit. Since she already graduated, I am thinking “I hope she is in basketball shape if she has to try out.” All I know is I’m assigned to complete this project, but uncertain on how fast he will pursue these teams.

Two-Hour Plan

12/4/2018

So far my strategy is working, and I am off to a great start. Since today is a two-hour day (typically every other intern session), I decided to focus on four countries. These countries were Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, and Denmark. As previously mentioned, some of these teams have more than one professional basketball league. That said, I separated the leagues to allow Paris to decide on what league she would want to be a part of. During this time, I realize that most of these teams are relatively stable and decided to place teams on the list with the average record of 4-6 on the list as well. One drawback I’m noticing about this site are the updates on player injuries. For example, if a player is injured, the statistics will merely be “zero” across the stat book; instead of acknowledging the injury. This was a challenge because from the outside looking in, I am unaware of the teams' star players, so if she is injured, it leaves me to believe that she is treated as a reserve player. Nonetheless, I kept the research going and added these teams to the list of possibilities.

WWW.eurobasket Here I Come.com

12/2/2018

After speaking with Mr. Greene the other day and having a few personal days to myself, I decided to start with the project involving Paris McLeod. Paris is a talented former collegiate basketball player who still has the drive to play ball. In fact, she was a player at Glenville Community College in Inkster, Michigan, where Mr. Greene teaches. From the start of my day, I decided to map a strategy that will help me with my journey. As mentioned before eurobasket.com has all of the information that I need to complete the task. So after logging on and “clicking on the women’s tab” I selected the continent of Europe---and GOOD GRIEF (I about passed out). Once you are on the site, you have a list of 47 countries that all have professional European Basketball teams. Within these countries are different Europe Leagues ranging from WABA, BWBL, EWBL, and CEWL.

From the start, I knew this was going to be tough. The strategy that I developed to complete the task started with dividing the teams into groups that coordinated to specific days. On the days that I planned for extended hours, I did extended work. This would total 7 days accumulating 33 hours. On shorter days, I spent two hours simply arranging teams in alphabetical order, according to a 500 and below record. After compiling a list of all of the teams who had game records posted, I completely eliminated teams that were elite. My logic behind alleviating those teams, was if teams are winning and competing at a high level. Most likely, they will continue to pursue the players they already have.

On the shorter 2-3 hour days, I decided to look at approximately 4-6 teams. However, on the days that I obtained 4-6 hours, I decided to complete 7-12 teams (teams vary depending on the number of leagues some of these countries had). First up, I completed Albania through Bulgaria. I studied the roster and only focused on guard positions. During this time, I removed any teams who had less than a 500 season record. However, those teams who failed to have winning records were placed on the list. Many of these teams were 1-10; 2-8; or 3-11. After eliminating competitive teams, I then looked at player statistics from each (especially the guards) position and added Paris McLeod to teams that I feel she could earn a position based on her talent and current international players not being consistent. This process will continue for the entire month of December.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving

11/30/2018

While relaxing in Florida for the holiday, I decided to check in with my mentor—Mr, Greene. Our conversation was fun and went something like this:

Me: “Hello Mr. Greene, how are you?”

Mr. Greene: “I’m great. I can’t complain because I’m enjoying the sun in New Orleans.”

Me: “Yeah? Well, make sure you eat some of that great food. Eat enough for me and you.”

(we both laughed)

Me: “I finally completed the NBA project. Whenever you get a chance, let me know if I need to make changes. In the meantime, I am ready to keep the hours rolling and would love another task.”

Mr.Greene: “That sounds great! I will review the assignment once I get a chance to sit down without disruptions.”

Me: “Ok, thank you, sir, sounds good!”

Mr: Greene: “Hey, Uhh---have you heard of eurobasket.com?”

Me: “No sir, can’t say that I have.”

Mr.Greene: “well look, I have this girl named Paris who is looking to play professional basketball in Europe. What I want you to do is look over this website (I sent it to your email), study the site for about an hour and call me back.”

Me: (I completed the instructions and called Mr. Greene back)

Mr. Greene: “Ok so tell me what you think?”

Me: “I love the fact that you can follow both the teams and players through live streaming devices; the website seems to provide applicable information for players, coaches, and career seekers; it also lists every continent--not just Europe, and I absolutely love the fact it provides information on both men’s and women’s teams.”

Mr. Greene: “Nice job! Now what I want you to do is find teams in Europe that you feel would be a great fit for Paris and write those teams down. You got it?”

Me: “Yes sir, any particular format you want me to present the information?”

Mr. Greene: “I can care less about the format, you can text it to me for all I care” (we both laughed, and we ended the conversation).

After a Rookies NBA Draft

11/29/2018

After locating teams for each player, I reorganized the final presentation. Included in the presentation, was all of the information that I have researched to this point. The presentation was a detailed study of the top Big Ten Conference players, statistics for each player, NBA role projections, draft teams, post-rookie draft teams, graphic layout design, and eligible free agent current salaries. As I am approaching the middle portion of my internship process (as a whole), I realize the importance of accurate research. As previously mentioned, my predictions will be challenged by other sports agents within the region. This challenge has forced me to present some of my best work. My experiences with these research findings force me to pay attention to specific details including minor statistics. During this time, my communication with my mentor is essential. Knowing my mentor has a busy schedule when we converse I do my best to ensure that I cover every detail and ask multiple questions when the assignment is initially presented. Topics that are important include the layout or design of the project, player roles, and statistics. From previous experience, I learned to cover all bases that I am unaware of. For example, in the final organization of the presentation, I added current player salaries of upcoming free agents. Although this information was not required, this information showed my mentor that I was willing to go above and beyond the requirements of the assignment to gain personal knowledge of the topic.

Looking back over the past few weeks, I wish we could reduce the amount of repetition. I also believe this task is great for a group. Having someone complete this type of research can be a struggle because the expectations and the stress this adds when exposed to massive amounts of information. On the positive side, I was forced to discipline myself. Although there were many times when I wanted to give up—I had to regroup and press forward. Today, I completely finished and submitted the assignment.

My Last Rookie

11/27/2018

I FINALLY found placement for my last rookie selection—Josh Reaves. Since the season has begun, most of Sports Center’s talk has slammed Oklahoma City Thunder. After cumulative hours of research, I decided this would be a tremendous post-rookie alternative for Josh Reaves. Within the next two years, Oklahoma will lose a total of five guards. This leaves franchise players Westbrook and George with no help on a first or second string basis that can produce consistent numbers. If Reaves conquers his rookie years, he can definitely produce for OKC.

As I tie up my two-hour strategy, I am experiencing burnout. For the entire month of November, I focused and completed three parts to this project. Overall, I love the in-depth research and the knowledge I am adding to the sports from a “behind the scenes” view. At this point, I am wondering if agents actually do this type of work prior to recruiting or do they develop a team that creates these blueprints. One advantage of this project was the length of time it took to gather and compile information. Now all I have to do is create a presentation and present the project 😊!

Another Day of Post-Rookie Drafts

11/25/2018

With only two players left needing post-rookie teams, Jordan Poole is a young player who actually thought about leaving the collegiate level of play in 2018. After completing multiple summer training sessions, he soon realized he was not ready for the next level of play, and enrolled back into school. This season, spectators, coaches, leagues, and agents are expecting Jordan to perform and compete at a higher level than last season. After reviewing Jordan’s capabilities, Jordan Poole stays through the Lakers rebuilding stage. He can become a franchise player for the team and assist Romeo Langford to a few season championships (by this time, the western conference will be “evenly distributed” with multiple trades happening within the next two years).

As the day comes to an abrupt end, I am experiencing the challenges of blogging. A typical daily journal allows you to reflect on your actives, results, and feelings; repetition is usually not worth mentioning unless there are significant changes. Unfortunately, in my case, I am experiencing more frustration than usual. Although I am performing the assigned tasks, I think having a smaller number of players to focus on would give me more leverage to discuss in my journals that don’t repeat information. If I were to make changes, I would consider researching five player biographies at a time; move on to the next assignment, then completing the other five at a later date. In reality, the process that I am achieving to complete these player biographies are the exact same, with a different name.

New Orleans Pelicans

11/23/2018

As the countdown of the last few players continues, Isaiah Roby’s style of play seems to be a permanent fit for the New Orleans Pelicans. Extended research proves the New Orleans Pelicans are expected to trade seven forwards from 2019-2021. In 2021, Anthony Davis could also be traded leaving this team searching for a powerhouse athlete to dominate the floor. Considering Roby has a reliable jump shot and can execute on the defensive end blocking shots, this could be a start of a new era for the Pelicans.

During the process of completing these assigned tasks, I understand the importance of multi-tasking. After assessing further research of a sports agent, having specific skill sets such as developmental strategies, communication, and the knowledge of player contracts are connection capabilities between players and agents. The success that I’ve experienced thus far equates the ability to comprehend and complete desired tasks with not former sports agent experience. These capabilities that I am acquiring are all resources that have been learned experiences over the course of the MBA program. Along with discipline, I am able to use many of the responsibilities that I’ve mastered over the last few years.

Trailblazers and Lakers Got Who?

11/20/2018

Today’s process shined a light on Cassius Winston and Romeo Langford. These players have a strong chance to rebuild with both the Trailblazers and the Lakers. One defining moment studied their style why the other reviewed the contracts and salary caps of current players. Considering both of these teams are struggling, in the years to come these organizations will hope for a complete turnaround. But first, they must seek young and elite talent to secure the brand.

As the season begins, Portland could lose two of their most effective guards: Damian Lillard and C.J McCullom. Even though the team will lose two more ineffective guards, Portland could develop Winston along with another strong guard to replace the leaving talent. On the other hand, Romeo Langford should join Jordan Poole and rebuild the Lakers franchise. Having three years of league experience will be plenty of time to start focusing on a team that will lose all of their guards (including guard/small forward Lebron James).

While my choices are approaching the end of its journey, the active research behind these players is not only complicated, time-consuming and frustrating at times; it teaches patience and the art behind strategy and development.

The benefits of the project were broken down into stages which allowed you to focus on a specific task. However, some drawbacks that need improvement are the number of players to be considered. Even though ten players from one conference entering the league are realistic, arranging an assignment that does not involve a team strategy complicates the research process and possibilities should be narrowed down to the top five prospects.

What’s Next for Charles Matthews?

11/18/2018

Thus far, I absolutely love the game that Charles Matthews plays. When it comes to the Big Ten Conference, I love to follow Michigan. Prior to the internship experience, I always impressed with Charles’s ability to play the game; particularly his hustle plays and his leadership role on and off of the court. This also presented some challenges. Considering I love college basketball, initially I found myself arranging players from my liking and not from a statistical perspective. One downfall from this assignment was the challenges of not having a partner to compare and contrast. From part two of the project, I assigned Charles Matthews with the Atlanta Hawks. Ironically, in part three, I had Charles staying with the Atlanta Hawks and possibly becoming a franchise player. It wasn’t until now before I thought about any of these players becoming a franchise player. Not only does Charles has the talent, but his poise gestures and leadership capabilities also prove he is a solid foundation for a team to build around him. As previously mentioned, Charles Matthews would be a great addition to the ATL Hawks; alongside Kent Bazemore and Trae Young will allow this team in the midst of rebuilding to dominate the eastern conference. The Hawks also have three of their guards listed as a 2022 free agent, allowing some financial room to acquire this rookie.

During the initial portion of the project, I often relied on my emotions to determine the success of these future candidates. However, that habit was soon broken as I imagined myself as a coach with the intent of building a championship team. Nonetheless, this task was a lot harder when I have never been a sports agent.

Early Saturday Morning

11/17/2018

This morning I decided to continue the post-rookie season draft process. Before starting my day, I researched NBA placement for the “Terrapins” Bruno Fernando. This was easier than I imagined. Bruno plays the role of a post player, and I instantly thought about the Cavs recent loss of Lebron James. Bruno Fernando would be a great fit for the Cleveland Cavaliers. As we know (according to stats), Tristan Thompson is not always consistent and struggles with leading this team as a post player. Tristan Thompson and Ante Zizic will both be free agents prior to 2022, leaving room for Fernando to showcase his skills and be an effective leader for the eastern conference.

Reflecting on the importance of player biographies, primarily they are designed as a player promotion. During this task, my most significant focus was to understand each of the player's flaws and design a structure that executes their skill sets. When creating future predictions, I have learned to focus more on their performances from the most recent stats and ideas and develop a player biography that showcases my findings. In many cases, including today, I was able to view game film that showed an entire game. While skimming through, I noticed a few flaws from Bruno. However, his hustle plays and game stats overshadow his shortcomings and is considered natural gameplay for most coaches.

Another Team Accomplished

11/16/2018

Since my last extended research, I am back trying to accomplish the two-hour challenge, and I am locating a team for my third Big Ten Conference player—James Palmer. In my efforts to complete the assignment, I wanted to evenly distribute players according to their talent and the talent needed for both the eastern and western conferences. That said, I felt James Palmer could execute his talent with the San Antonio Spurs. At 6’5 and 200lbs, Palmer can score sufficient minutes with the San Antonio Spurs. By 2022, the Spurs could lose 7 guards in total, including an All-Star player DeMar DeRozan. Palmer has the size and the opportunity to lead this team but will have to adapt to coach Gregg Popovich’s style of play. After narrowing my search criteria, today was much easier than I thought due to the previous challenges. At this point, I am able to draw a list of five teams and cross out those who do not fit the player's style of play.

On the other hand, I’m still discouraged because my selections are not a guarantee and I know my mentor/agent is eagerly seeking some of these players to discuss NBA possibilities. This pressure is taking a toll because I am thinking “what if.” These thoughts are both good and bad. At this point, my thoughts are considering all of the course work that I have engaged in and applying the knowledge that is learned. Thus far, I have also considered questions that may cross my mentor's mind as he viewed the project and tried my best to answers those questions in a short reasoning response before he proposes the opportunity. In other words, my challenge for Mr. Greene is to eliminate the “why” completely.

Extended Research of Player Salary Caps

11/14/2018

Today, my research seemed longer than usual. I decided to narrow my 2022 free agents by teams. From the start, it seems like this research is off topic. However, it was apart of the dedicated formatted that I designed and will make sense in the future. I happened to look up all 30 NBA teams and decided to list their 2022 free agents in alphabetical order. I also researched how much these players currently make and how many years each player has been in the league. These players were also ranked by their position. This gave me a better idea of teams to look into. For example, in 2022, the Atlanta Hawks have a total of three free agents listed, two are point guards, and the other is a shooting guard. Fundamentally these players can interchange and play the same position. In total, these players currently make $9,881,106. As I look for post-rookie teams, I know Atlanta will need three guards to fill these positions. In other words, teams that have contracts surpassing the 2022 season were already eliminated.

After narrowing this broad search, I was able to locate a team for the next player—Ethan Happ. In 2020, the Hornets may lose three key players: Marvin Williams, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Dwayne Bacon totaling the average annual value of approximately $27,898,917. Even though the Hornets may acquire more players, Happ can be the big man this team needs to earn a conference win. Once I narrowed my search criteria, finding applicable teams are arranged to stay within the two-hour progress period.

Carsen Edwards

11/13/2018

For my 2019 NBA Draft projections, I have Carsen Edwards being selected as the highest. In the beginning, Carsen seemed to be a great fit with the Indiana Pacers. However, if Carsen Edwards performs as predicted, he will have a great chance to rebuild the Philadelphia 76ers. During his post-rookie season trade, the Sixers could possibly lose J.J Reddick, T. J. McConnell, Furkan, Korkmaz, Jimmy Buttler, Ben Simmons, and Markelle Fultz prior to 2022.

Although this was my first three-year projection, the research behind finding an appropriate team takes a significant amount of time, and the learning expectations are set extremely high. Thus far, I’ve had to discipline myself because the extensive research that is required can lead to searching for other topics that express the same amount of interest. However, my love for basketball is a huge advantage for me. Unfortunately, I often tie myself up with watching massive amounts of game film to study the player. Not only have I study Carsen today, but I also reviewed the 76ers entire team and their season projections as it relates to future expectations for their team. As my journey continues, I am dedicated to sticking to the format that I have created for myself.

Two-Hour Studies

11/11/2018

Per the assignment instructions, part three of the NBA Draft was to find post teams for rookie players drafted in 2019. As previously mentioned, I learned that the post-rookie season is after two years of the initial NBA entrance. So, I had to find teams for the 2022 season. The challenge behind this assignment was not to only project the future but find teams where these players actually receive playing time and not a reserve player apart of the team. Typically, receiving playing time is a result of excellence that has been earned by a specific player.

To relieve the stress of extended research, I developed a two-hour plan (not all progress was made within this time frame, just an average goal per player). This plan was designed to focus on one player in the order from the highest draft pick to the lowest. As I focused on one player, I designed a list that was used as a questionnaire guide to help make my decision. I also planned to dedicate one 6 hour day this week to organize my findings into the presentation with a layout. Keeping in mind, the original layout was transformed from alphabetical order to strongest possibility to the least. Mapping out specific websites that helped determined my decisions were:

www.NBA.com

www.sportrac.com

www.Forbes.com/NBA

www.ESPN.com

and specific Big Ten school sites paying particular attention to both the current and previous stats for each player. I also developed a set of questions to help my process. These questions were presented as followed:

1. What position does the player play?

2. How well does the player execute his position?

3. How well does the player perform under pressure against a high level of competition?

4. Injury history?

5. What advantages and disadvantages were presented when watching game film?

6. How well does the player adapt to the coach's style of play?

7. How disciplined is the player when mistakes are made?

After compiling a questionnaire and a strategy for obtaining three-year projections, I was ready to begin the post-rookie season process.

Part 3 of the NBA Draft

11/8/2018

Today, Mr. Greene absolutely loved the work I have presented thus far. There is no greater feeling knowing that my long hours of hard work has paid off. Just when I thought I was being relieved, he assigns me with a part three to the assignment. During our communication, I learned that a players “rookie” year (s) ends after two seasons or only two years. Now, after all of these years of me playing basketball, I never knew this information. Nor here or there, the third portion of the presentation was to find teams for these ten players after their rookie seasons. Looking back, I knew how intense the research was to find the initial teams; let alone future predictions going into three years.

Once again, I revisited “Sportrac” (informational website). This information allowed me to dig deeper into my research and apply more specific websites such as NBA.com to locate the players who are approaching the end of their contracts, statistics from the previous seasons. This also allowed me to study players that I did not know much information about. However, today was more than just player contracts. I applied some research from Forbes.com and learned the value of these teams and the financial asset range each team has accrued to understand the player salary limits. Thus far, I recognized that all of the NBA teams are worth at least one million dollars. This knowledge then carries over to allow teams with higher expenditures to build superstar teams such as those that were formed in the early 2000s.

Showing Charlotte Some Love

11/6/2018

Josh Reaves is my last player for the draft pick. Although he has come to develop more as a player, he’ll give the Charlotte Hornets that chance to develop and evolve as a stronger player. When I look back in history, Josh Reaves is a player that could potentially stay with one team for an extended period of time. Most of the teams that I have chosen for these ten players have not won a Championship in years, others even decades.

Reflecting on the first-round picks, in general, was a tough task. I realized that it is more than just active research. In fact, you have to high basketball I.Q. to place each individual where they can possibly succeed strategically. Not to mention, players like Zion Williamson who is projected to go number one in the 2019 Draft. The challenges presented applies to more than just the Big Ten Conference. In most cases, my predictions will not be validated until the exposure of March Madness. Unfortunately, that tournament is months away from now. After speaking to Mr. Greene, he’s not big on the format of the work being presented. However, since I knew he was comparing my results to other agents in the region, I decided to present a power point. The organization of the powerpoint placed each player with their respective teams and gave an in-depth description as to why these players would be a good fit. The powerpoint discussed current players who may possibly leave each team due to trades and free agent contracts and a pictorial view of the players that I feel may be new NBA prospects.

Extended Research Happened Here

11/4/2018

This continuous process of fitting the right players is still occurring. Accumulative, I spent a total of six hours to find placement for these next two players. I was able to watch two full game films (this took most of my time) posted from last season. The importance of watching game film, allows me to see how the players produce under pressure against competition that is stronger or as compatible as the other teams. Like every collegiate conference, there are teams who are more competitive than others and often times; players tend to play to that level. Saying that I was able to place Romeo Langford, Jordan Poole, and Isaiah Roby on teams that I thought would be a great fit. Many of these teams have players with contracts will end and other players who will become free agents. Today, I really processed the thought of splitting up the Golden State Warriors. After following ESPN, it is becoming evident that the team will split. In fact, this disaster with Kevin Durrant and Draymond Green reminds me of the Detroit Pistons split in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, my strategy behind placing these players to an appropriate team was hoping to develop a stronger league in the East. As many of you who may follow professional basketball, notice the dominating play in the Western Conference. Realistically, out of these three players, Romeo Langford was the only player suitable to play in the Eastern Conference. Personally, his style of play will be beneficial with the Brooklyn Nets.

While my internship is coming to an end, I spoke with my mentor and updated him on my progress with the first round picks. Now, I only have to make space for one more player, but this will be completed at a later date…stay tuned!

On the Court and Off the Bench

10/27/2018

Yesterday, I was able to select two more players to appropriate draft teams. As the process continues, Charles Mathews should join the Atlanta Hawks, and Cassius Winston could earn a spot with the Orlando, Magic. Even though, the Atlanta Hawks are stacked with guards. I believe they need a backup point guard that will be effective enough to earn the six-man rotation. As mentioned earlier, Cassius is a phenomenal player and seems as if he can adjust to this young team.

In my journey, I’m learning patience is the key to success and research goes beyond a “few clicks” of a button. In reality, I’m watching hours of film both pre-recorded and real-time along with having the mindset of a coach and business opportunists—seeking potential players. The research is intense. However, when you genuinely love the game of a particular sport, you don’t seem to mind the long hours to produce competitive results.

Today, wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I think reality set in. When I think about the NBA Draft and the likelihood that all of these players would be drafted, it never crossed my mind that there are multiple rounds and some of these players may not be drafted until rounds that are not exposed until the draft is over. In reality, most of these players lose hope, then receive a call at a later date. This knowledge is complicating my research. Hypothetically speaking, let’s say these players are not selected, and they do not remain in NBA shape. This changes the momentum of my draft picks. Today, Michigan had a game. I was able to catch the first half. So far, I am still impressed with Charles Mattews style of play. He’s living up to my predictions. WHAT A SIGN OF RELIEF!

NBA Draft Pick

10/26/2018

After spending more hours looking for appropriate Draft teams, I chose to send James Palmer to the Memphis Grizzlies and thought he and Bruno Fernando would fit great with the New York Knicks. In researching, I noticed both of these teams would be losing players at the three and four spots (guard and post positions), and other players are merely non—competitive factors. My thoughts for these two players, if they work hard in the off-season, it will allow both of them to be a potential threat either as a starter or an “off the bench” threat. It also seems that these teams also have the finances to score these big players. Although it is too early to determine the line-up of the draft (as far as top picks from NBA teams), these two teams may have an early look to select some great talent. One a drawback in today’s research shined a light on the coaching styles. With new you players joining the league, the league will have to adapt to the styles of players they have and potentially shy away from forcing their coaching style on young players. As of today, I found suitable teams for four potential players from the Big Ten Conference. As my journey begins tomorrow, I will focus on the next two players.

NBA Predictions

10/24/2018

Just when I thought the assignment would get easier the research becomes even more intense. The third portion of the research process forced me to choose an NBA team for these players. Of course, these processes had little to do with personal thoughts and were based on stats, contracts, finances, and projected playing time. This assignment was narrowed into a five-day process. As I am staring the process, I receive a call from Mr. Greene, and he says “make sure the teams you choose for these players, they have a great chance to be more than bench players.”

First, this didn’t seem so harsh because I have completed all of the relevant research to complete the assignment. However, I had to take all of the information that I had on these players and convince myself that they would actually make the NBA. These predictions got harder once I had to review all 30 teams and their review each player category roster according to the positions listed under the colligate players account. One complication about this was the player’s position usually changes according to their size and the NBA franchise usually defines you as a different position than what a particular usually plays. For example, If a 6’7, 212lbs point guard enters the league. It is a high percentage that the team will have this player play the guard/small forward position.

Today, I was able to figure out predictions for two players. My goal this week is to complete predictions for two players a day. Realistically, the hours behind finding appropriate teams suitable for these players take a lot of time. I found a website called www.spotrac.com. This website is accurate in providing information for contracts and team finances to pursue specific players. This website has information on player contracts from all of the major United States sports leagues.

When using this site, I grouped the players I chose to advanced by position. Next, I referred to “sportrac” for information on the players eligible be free agents within the next season and was able to research my findings from there. So far, I have Carsen Edwards being drafted by the Indiana Pacers and Ethan Happ playing for the Los Angeles Clippers. These are the two players that I believe will be drafted first out of the Big Ten Conference.

What an Intense Day of Rankings

10/22/2018

The importance of today proved the effectiveness of the research. It seemed easy enough to strictly label these players according to the many hours I researched specific information. However, Once Mr. Greene told me to rank players from 1-10, I quickly realized this task was more intense than I imagined. Today, I was fortunate to have some spare time. Luckily, I invest Sirius XM Radio. This helped me a lot because Sirius XM has a few channels geared toward college basketball. With the first couple games approaching, I was able to hear professional projections about most of the players I thought were the most elite in the Big Ten.

Moments later, reality hit. I was hoping to find much more information on the internet. That was a negative. I found one article that spoke about the NBA Draft, but none specifically about the Big Ten Conference. This was shocking. At this point, I knew the information that I presented was being compared to a group of scouting professionals, and the only proof for my picks were previous stats and hopes from the upcoming season. Until now, I haven’t been able to follow college sports as much as I would like. So I was blindsided by these predictions.

To wrap up the day, I emailed Mr. Greene my rankings in order from 1-10 and mentioned one of my top picks (Charles Matthews) in his recent games. So far, Michigan has had a few games, and I really enjoy Charles Matthews style of play. As I’m watching him perform, I can visually see signs of relief and my top picks are proving why I chose them to advance to the NBA Draft.
